Since October 10, 2022, strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have become systematic and massive, leaving several million Ukrainians without access to electricity. More than 50% of the country’s energy system has been damaged, forcing the Ukrainian government to implement widespread power cuts, including in medical facilities and critical infrastructure. According to data from the World Health Organization, by November 21, 2022, the Russian Federation had conducted more than 700 attacks on Ukrainian healthcare facilities.

As a result, the population is urged to conserve electricity and prepare for power outages. However, this solution is unthinkable for hospitals, maternity wards, and healthcare facilities, where the treatment and often the survival of many patients depend on access to electricity.

These frequent power outages cause:

  • The postponement of non-urgent procedures and the cancellation of lengthy and/or complex surgeries.
  • Increased delays in patient care, leading to an inevitable rise in mortality and disability rates.
  • The exodus of qualified medical personnel, forced to relocate to western Ukraine, where they can continue their work more effectively.
  • Chronic overwork of healthcare staff, who are forced to use basic equipment that is less likely to be rendered inoperable by power outages.
  • Patient anxiety due to the interruption of scheduled treatments.

Our project “Generators for Ukraine” aims to acquire generators for hospitals, medical-social facilities, and critical infrastructure such as heating plants and municipal funeral homes in the regions of Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Dnipro. This will ensure access to care for residents of these regions, which are frequently targeted by Russian strikes, and help maintain the essential facilities of the country in operation.

Industrial generators have been distributed across three regions: Dnipro (24 units), Kharkiv (13 units), and Lviv (3 units). The beneficiaries include hospitals, psycho-neurological boarding schools, nursing homes (EHPADs), orphanages, and functional rehabilitation centers. Generators under 12 kVa have been allocated to residents, emergency medical services, and outpatient medical aid points in the regions of Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kherson, Kyiv, and Ivano-Frankivsk.

The distribution was carried out in partnership with the regional and municipal councils of Kharkiv, the regional council of Dnipro, as well as the municipalities of Kyiv and Dolyna (Ivano-Frankivsk region) to ensure administrative, logistical, and technical oversight.

We express our gratitude to our donors, whose contributions were essential to the success of this project.
