The visit to several localities near Brovary (Kyiv region) as well as the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
One year after the de-occupation, demining work is still far from complete, and the traumas of war and occupation continue to affect the daily lives of residents. Local administrations are seeking funds to rebuild damaged buildings and infrastructure.
Meetings with the administrations of Berezan, Baryshiv, and Brovary, visits to shelters for internally displaced persons, hospitals, as well as villages liberated after a month of occupation, have helped us better understand the needs and challenges of these areas. We provided household appliances to a shelter for internally displaced persons, thanks to a donation from a company in Bordeaux.
The Chernobyl area is facing difficulties in recruiting staff due to new logistical challenges related to destroyed bridges, checkpoints, and the cancellation of the train route that used to pass through Belarus.
A commute that previously took 45 minutes can now take between 5 and 6 hours!
Last autumn, we provided the Chernobyl hospital with a fully equipped ambulance to replace those that were looted by the Russians during the occupation of Chernobyl in March 2022.
The medical teams in Chernobyl have become like a family to around a hundred “samosely” in the exclusion zone—people who have returned and live in their homes despite the radiation, most of them now elderly. The women proudly show off their well-maintained gardens and homes adorned with tulips. The tranquility and beauty of the area create an almost paradisiacal image.
Our ongoing projects:
– Provision of medical equipment and medications
– Modernization of the dental clinic at the Chernobyl hospital
