Following the explosion of the Kakhovka Dam, the Dnipro Region was severely affected by water shortages, particularly in several urban areas.
The Kharkiv Region suffered damage following the destruction of the Oskile Dam in March 2022, near Izium, the main water reservoir in Donbass. However, the most significant damage was caused by fighting, shelling and pollution, affecting water supply systems.
During our mission, we visited the cities of Nikopol, Marganets and Kryvyi Rig in the Dnipro Region, as well as Zolochiv and Lozova in the Kharkiv Region, all heavily impacted by water shortages and war-related supply cuts.
We have identified several problems, including the need to create emergency water circuits, misinformation about how to improve water quality at home, corrosion of heating systems due to new sources of highly mineralized water, and heavy reliance on new, unsafe sources of drinking water.
Our emergency action will include:
– Supply of water towers: installation of 3 new water towers in the Kharkiv region.
– Creation of access points to drinking water: installation of reverse osmosis filtration systems on boreholes dug by municipalities at the foot of residential buildings, near hospitals and social structures, meeting the analyses carried out and the requested flow rates.
– Supply of submersible pumps: urgently needed, especially for the city of Nikopol, in order to maintain pumping of the Dnipro River despite the increasing difficulties.
– Installation of filtration and disinfection systems: planned at the outlet of the water towers and on the “Vodokanal” networks depending on the general condition of the piping and water analyses.
Current stage of the project: validation of specifications, ordering of the first water towers, search for funding for filtration systems.
